Squinting is the sign most people know to look for, and it's also one of the least common ways a functional vision problem actually shows up in a classroom. Most of the real signs look nothing like a stereotypical vision complaint.
Reading and Tracking Signs
Losing place while reading, needing a finger to track, skipping or rereading lines, and reading noticeably more slowly than decoding ability alone would predict all point toward oculomotor or convergence involvement. These often get attributed to careless reading or insufficient practice rather than recognized as a mechanical eye-movement issue.
Written Work Signs
Poor spacing, inconsistent letter sizing, slow and effortful copying from the board, and written work that's noticeably messier than a child's verbal ability would suggest often reflect visual-motor or accommodative difficulty rather than a fine motor or handwriting-specific problem on its own.
Postural and Behavioral Signs
Head tilting, closing or covering one eye, leaning unusually close to the page, and holding a consistently awkward position while reading or writing are the body compensating for a visual system that isn't comfortable working the standard way. Fidgeting or difficulty staying seated during near-work specifically — as opposed to across the whole school day — leans the same direction.
Attention Signs That Aren't Really Attention Signs
Task-specific inattention is one of the more useful and most overlooked patterns: a child who's distractible and avoidant specifically during reading or near-work, but engaged and focused during discussion, sports, or hands-on activities, is showing a pattern that argues for a visual driver over a global attention deficit.
What to Do With This List
No single item here is diagnostic on its own — plenty of children show one of these occasionally without any underlying problem. A cluster of several, especially ones that are consistent rather than occasional, is what actually warrants a referral for a full functional vision evaluation rather than continued monitoring.
