For decades, society thought of child development as something that simply unfolds; a genetic program ticking along on schedule, with the environment playing a supporting role at best. Feed a child, keep them safe, and their brain would mature according to its internal blueprint. But modern developmental science has completely rewritten this story, and what we know now needs to be more at the forefront of public knowledge.

Development Isn't Something That Happens To Children, It's Something That Happens Between Them and the World

Here's how it happens: development isn't a solo journey driven by genes and brain maturation, it's a fundamentally relational process between the child and the world. Every skill, every neural pathway, every capacity for self-regulation emerges from thousands of back-and-forth interactions between a child and their environment.

Think about how a baby learns to walk. It's not just the nervous system hitting a predetermined milestone. It's the dynamic interplay of leg strength, body proportions, motivation to reach a toy, the texture of the floor, a parent's encouraging smile, and countless attempts that end in tumbles and giggles. Change any part of that system, add weight to a baby's legs, change the surface they're on, maybe the pathways from one eye are not developing at the same rate as the other, and the whole pattern shifts. Walking emerges from the relationship between child and context, not from simple growth and maturation alone.

This same principle applies to everything: language, emotional regulation, problem-solving, empathy, vision. These capacities are co-constructed through what researchers call "proximal processes", the repeated, progressively more complex interactions between a child and the people, objects, and symbols in their immediate environment.

The Village Isn't a Nice-to-Have, It's the Architecture of Development

When we say "it takes a village to raise a child," we're not being sentimental. We're describing the actual mechanism of human development.

Children need nested layers of rich, responsive environments: warm interactions with caregivers who read their cues and help them regulate stress; relationships with siblings and peers that teach negotiation and perspective-taking; connections to extended family and community members who model different roles and values; exposure to cultural practices, stories, and expectations that provide meaning and identity.

This isn't about quantity of stimulation, it's about quality and dimensionality. Developmental science shows us that what matters most are experiences that are:

The Digital Dilemma: Reward Without Reciprocity

Here's why our current moment is of such concern. Digital experiences, by design, are exceptionally good at capturing attention and triggering reward systems. Bright colors, fast movement, immediate feedback, variable reinforcement schedules, the apps and games that children are engaging with are purposefully engineered to constantly hit those dopamine buttons in the brain.

But they're terrible at providing the multidimensional, bidirectional experiences that actually build a developing brain.

A child watching a screen receives input, but there's no genuine reciprocity. The app doesn't read the child's facial expression and adjust its emotional tone. It doesn't notice when the child is confused and scaffold the next step accordingly. It doesn't share joint attention or teach the child that their actions genuinely affect another mind.

Digital interaction is fundamentally one-directional. It creates consumers, not participants in relational systems.

Meanwhile, time on screens is time not spent in the messy, three-dimensional, full-body experiences of childhood: climbing trees and calibrating risk; navigating disagreements with peers and learning to repair relationships; feeling bored and generating creative solutions; reading adult faces during community gatherings and absorbing cultural narratives; running until breathless and learning what their body can do.

What Is Being Lost And What Must Be Protected

The architecture of human development was built for a world of villages, extended kin networks, and children embedded in the daily flow of community life. Our biology expects:

We're conducting an uncontrolled experiment by replacing these experiences with algorithmically optimized attention capture. And early signs, rising anxiety, depression, social difficulties, attention problems, developmental anomalies where nothing is wrong per se but something isn't just right either, suggest that this social experiment isn't going well.

The Path Forward

This isn't about demonizing technology or romanticizing the past. It's about understanding what development actually requires and making intentional choices.

We need to protect spaces and time for the bidirectional, embodied, multi-sensory experiences that build brains. That means defending unstructured outdoor play, prioritizing family meals and face-to-face conversation, ensuring children have relationships with multiple adults who know them, creating opportunities for kids to struggle, fail, and try again in the physical world.

It means recognizing that a child's development is not a program that runs inside their skull, but an ongoing co-construction between a growing person and a responsive world. And right now, we need to ensure that world is rich enough, human enough, and relational enough to do its essential work.

Because it really does take a village. And screens, however compelling, will never be one.
